SPFL Want to Introduce Facial Recognition Technology Which Could Cost £4Million

The SPFL want to introduce facial recognition technology in an attempt to crack down on offensive behaviour in Scottish football stadiums from next season.

But that could cost as much as £4million to roll out – according to news.stv.tv’s Rama Bhardwaj – with the league asking for financial support from the government for the scheme.

Recent incidents involving Celtic, Rangers and Dundee United supporters have prompted more discussion on the subject of offensive behaviour at football.

The Hoops banned three supporters after flares were set off at Stair Park during their Scottish Cup tie away at Stranraer last weekend. Police are also investigating complaints of anti-social behaviour by the travelling supporters.

Some Rangers fans also came in for criticism following their clash with Hibs in December, with the club releasing a statement which vowed to help police tackle “inappropriate singing” during the match.

While United had to warn their supporters that they could face having to play games behind closed doors after the use of pyrotechnics during their defeat to Celtic at Tannadice on Friday night.

The facial recognition technology would create a database of fans who should be banned from grounds across the country if identified as offenders.

According to Bhardwaj’s report, if a banned fan tried to enter a stadium, an alert would be sent informing clubs to take action.

The hope must be that the scheme would deter any supporters from offensive behaviour at games.

But potentially spending £4million on the scheme may be seen as a bad move when Scottish football is under-resourced as it is.

And some supporters definitely don’t agree with the move:
