Rangers, Celtic and Hearts have designs on first place, but another side are keen to enter top three statusThey may be outside bets but Jens Berthel Askou won’t write off Motherwell’s chances of gate-crashing the Premiership’s top three.The Fir Park side sit fourth ahead of facing Hearts at Tynecastle on Saturday, but after three defeats in the last four, Hibs below them are now just three points behind. Motherwell’s performances and style of play have been lauded for large portions of the season and they are firmly in the race for European football, albeit talk of overtaking leaders Hearts, second-placed Rangers or Celtic one spot above has died down amid their form blip.Heading into the weekend, the Steelmen are 10 points off Celtic with 18 left to play for, including another clash with Hearts, and matches against both sides of the Old Firm in the top six split. Askou is looking forward to seeing how his players cope with the demands of playing Scotland’s best for the remainder of the season as he holds hope of moving up the table.Read MoreCould Motherwell finish in the top three?“We’re ambitious, that’s what I’m going to say,” said Askou. “We’re ambitious about achieving whatever is possible for us. And obviously the position we have now is possible. Is it possible to climb higher? Well, a lot of things have to really align for that to happen. But we will try our very, very best to do it as long as it’s possible. But we have to keep progressing and pushing ourselves as a team to our limit. Being at this stage with so much to win is obviously a fantastic environment and setting for our players and coaches to be in and see how we deal with it.” Hearts are yet to defeat Motherwell this season after draws at Tynecastle and Fir Park earlier this term. The Gorgie clash in August finished 3-3 after the visitors raced into a three-goal lead before Derek McInnes’ hosts fired back, and Askou feels both teams have developed since one of the season’s most exciting clashes.“Obviously if you play against Hearts at Tynecastle and you have something, they get more intense,” said Askou. “They play with more risk, they are really, really good at chasing the game. They have some tools in the box. They can really load the box, they can cross, they are really, really good at attacking the ball in the air in all sorts of ways. So you can do two things. Hearts vs Motherwell assessed“You can sit back and defend and hope the best or you can keep being brave and attacking. That’s probably what we struggled the last time, we struggled to keep doing the last thing. Then obviously there are some like individual mistakes that we have not seen from the players since then. So it’s also about individual level getting higher, and also having been in these situations against some of the best since, and more as a group dealing with these emotions. We were quite new. If that happens, we will be in a better place.“We can’t expect to go up there and just be cruising through and feel totally on top all the time. I expect a much tougher game than the one we felt we had because obviously Hearts know more about how to deal with us and what we’re doing. They’ve also grown through the season, added some more players, I don’t think Claudio Braga started that game. “He made a huge difference when he came on. Had he been starting, maybe it could have been a bit different. It’s a different game, obviously, and we’ve grown throughout the season. But now there’s, emotionally, everything is at a different stage now of the season where the smallest thing can make a huge impact on the momentum and shift the momentum.”…
