Graeme Souness: If I Could Take Anybody Out For a Drink It Would Be The Queen

If Graeme Souness could take any woman in the world out for a drink in the pub he’d choose the Queen.

The former Rangers and Liverpool manager made the admission during an interview with the Daily Mail for the newspaper’s Who Am I? series, and chose the monarch ahead of any other person on the planet.

He is quoted as saying: “If I could take anybody for a drink in the pub it would be the Queen.

“I’m a royalist and admire what she represents, though I imagine she’s full of mischief.

“I think she’d be a gin and tonic lady and I’d join her, it’s the only spirit I drink. Large slice of lemon in a nice glass with a good gin.”

Souness is a three-time European Cup winner, and his playing and managerial CV puts him amongst some of the most decorated British players of all-time.

Since retiring from football, he has become one of Sky Sports’ most respected pundits, but in the revealing interview, he gives his opinions on various aspects other than the Beautiful Game – and of course, the Queen.

In his opinion, he also goes on to say that he regards Andy Murray as the greatest sportsman in Britain’s history, adding:

“Andy Murray is Britain’s greatest ever sportsman, no question.

“Who is ahead of him? Racing drivers are so reliant on the car, if you’re Lester Piggott how much is the horse responsible?

“Golf is a mental game but they don’t push themselves physically.

“Only boxers come anywhere near, the likes of Joe Calzaghe, Carl Froch. I’d like to be Murray for a day — I’ve been part of a team and I’d like to see the mental toughness required in an individual sport.”

Souness started his playing career aged 15 when he signed for Tottenham in 1968 but he’s best remembered for his seven seasons at Liverpool, where he won five League Championships, three European Cups and four league Cups – as well as a player-manager stint at Ibrox.

The 62-year-old seems to be in rude health following reports recently that he had suffered a heart scare before Christmas.

The 62-year-old, who underwent a triple heart bypass aged just 38 in 1992.
