Kenny Miller: Injury denied Martyn Waghorn a 40-goal haul for Rangers this season

KENNY MILLER reckons Martyn Waghorn would have smashed through the 40-goal barrier for Rangers this season if he hadn’t spent several weeks on the sidelines.

The striker netted his 28th goal of the campaign against Kilmarnock in February but was then ruled out of action with a knee injury.

Waghorn made his return against St Mirren earlier this month and will now look to fire Mark Warburton’s side to Scottish Cup glory against Hibernian.

Miller said: “We will never know, but in my opinion he would definitely have hit that landmark had he not got injured. He was scoring at an incredible rate, and all kinds of goals.

“I wouldn’t say Waggy is an out-and-out goal scorer, because he has got so much more to his game.

“He has been playing right for most of the season with me playing right. There is a freedom to move and interchange your position.

“He can dribble, he has got a great left foot, he is a powerful player, he is quick. He has got everything you need to go and be a good striker.

“He has got a lot more to his game than just goals. But there is no doubt in my opinion that he would have got to that 40 goal landmark.”

The form of Waghorn this term has been just one of several pleasing aspects for boss Warburton during a successful campaign to date.

And Miller is delighted at how the newly assembled Gers squad have coped in their first season at Ibrox.

“I can’t speak highly enough of the boys because they have really taken it on board,” he told Peter and Roughie’s Football Show.

“The manager’s message has been clear about how big the club is, the history of the club, the demands and expectations. It is only going to get greater but they have really embraced it and taken it on.

“The guys get it, they know what it is about, what it takes and the demands and expectations, that they need to go and win every game and if they don’t it’s a disaster.

“They have taken it on board. To pinpoint one or two isn’t fair because every single one who has come in has been great.”
