“Why not?” – Rangers player flirts with move to specific country, has bought house there
Rangers’ Cyriel Dessers has left the door open to leave Russell Martin’s side this summer.
The Scottish club will take on Club Brugge in a Champions League qualifier at Ibrox later today.
Ahead of this clash, Het Laatste Nieuws had a detailed chat with the Rangers player to discuss a few topics, including his future plans.
The Belgium-born Nigeria international left US Cremonese for Rangers in July 2023 and has excelled at Ibrox, scoring 52 times and registering 17 assists from 112 games.
HLN points out that his impressive displays for Rangers have led to reports linking him to other clubs. In the past, the former OH Leuven and KRC Genk man had received interest from Club Brugge.
“There has indeed been contact with Club Brugge twice. Once when [Ivan] Leko [between 2017 and 2019] was manager and the last time when I was playing for Cremonese. But that interest never materialised,” he said.
The newspaper immediately asked the striker whether he would consider returning to Belgium. He didn’t waste this opportunity to send a message to potential suitors in the Jupiler Pro League.
“Why not? It’s still too early anyway, but I’ve been living abroad for quite a while, and I recently bought a house in Mechelen. There are a few Belgian teams I’m particularly fond of,” Dessers explained.
He didn’t make it clear whether buying a house in Belgium recently has got anything to do with a potential transfer. The attacker, however, revealed KV Mechelen supporters have urged him to join their club.
“I’ve already been approached a few times in Mechelen by KV Mechelen fans asking if I’d like to play for Malinwa. [laughs] And I don’t think my wife and in-laws would mind either. Although we’ll have to see how that works out with my career,” he added.
Dessers’ contract with Russell Martin’s side expires in 2027, but he doesn’t want to close any doors for now.
“In recent years, I’ve played for top teams in the Netherlands, Scotland, and Belgium, which is fantastic, but KV Mechelen is also a fantastic club. And otherwise, I try to leave as many doors open as possible; you never know what a career will bring,” the Rangers man said.
